How to update your CV
Updating a CV properly is different from simply adding your latest job to the top. Done well, you refresh the content, the format and the focus at once. Here is how to do it right.
Knowing how to update a CV properly is different from simply adding your latest job to the top. A CV that has sat untouched for a couple of years quietly falls behind current standards, and a quick patch job rarely fixes that. When you update a CV well, you refresh the content, the format and the focus all at once, so it reflects both who you are now and what employers expect today.
Here is how to update a CV so it is genuinely ready, not just current on dates.
When you need to update a CV
Refresh it whenever you change role, take on new responsibilities, gain a qualification or deliver a notable result, and review it at least once a year even if nothing dramatic has changed. The worst time to start is the day a perfect job appears, when you are rushing. A CV kept reasonably current is one of the simplest forms of career insurance.
How to update a CV, step by step
Add your recent experience properly
Do not just paste in a job title. Add achievement-led bullets with results, the same standard as the rest of the CV.
Refresh your personal statement
Your level and focus may have shifted. Make sure the opening still reflects who you are now and where you are heading.
Update your skills
Add what you have learned, and remove anything dated. Skills move quickly, especially technical ones.
Trim the old
As you add at the top, summarise or cut the oldest, least relevant roles so the CV does not simply grow longer each time.
Modernise the format
If it still has an objective statement, full address or dense paragraphs, bring it up to current standards.
Check it still passes the software
Standards for applicant tracking systems evolve. Make sure the format is still clean and parseable.
Modernise an outdated CV
If your CV has not been touched in a few years, it may carry habits that now date you: an objective statement instead of a personal statement, your full home address, references lines, a photo, or a cramped two-column design. Strip those out. Current CVs are clean, single-column, achievement-led and free of personal data that adds nothing. Our CV format guide shows the current standard, and the common CV mistakes guide flags what to remove.
Update for the role, not just the calendar
The best updates are not generic. As you refresh, tilt the CV toward the kind of role you want next, leading with the experience and skills that matter for that direction. Updating a CV is a chance to sharpen its focus, not just its dates. For the underlying principles, see our complete guide to writing a CV.
