ATS CV checker: tools to test your CV
Before you apply, it is natural to want to know if your CV will pass the software. A checker is a useful safety net, but relied on blindly it can mislead. Here is how to use one well.
Before you submit an application, it is natural to want to know whether your CV will actually pass the software. That is where an ATS CV checker comes in: a tool that scans your CV the way an applicant tracking system would and flags problems before a real employer ever sees them. Used sensibly, an ATS CV checker is a useful safety net. Relied on blindly, it can mislead you. Here is how to use one well.
What an ATS CV checker does
These tools simulate how a system parses and scores your CV. Typically you upload your CV, and often the job advert too, and the checker reports how cleanly it parsed, whether key sections were recognised, which keywords from the advert are present or missing, and sometimes an overall match score. It is a way to catch formatting and keyword problems while you can still fix them.
What a checker is genuinely useful for
- Spotting formatting that does not parse, like content lost from tables or columns.
- Confirming your sections are recognised correctly.
- Highlighting important keywords from the advert that you have missed.
- Giving you a sanity check before an application that matters.
Where ATS CV checkers mislead
No tool knows which exact system a given employer uses, so scores are an approximation, not a verdict. Chasing a perfect score can also push you toward stuffing keywords or stripping your CV of everything that makes it persuasive to a human. A CV that scores 100% with a checker but reads like a keyword list will still lose the interview. Treat the score as a guide, not a target.
How to use a checker properly
Fix the format issues first
If it flags parsing problems, those are real and worth fixing, in line with our ATS-friendly format guide.
Add genuinely missing keywords
If it flags relevant terms you actually match, add them naturally, as covered in our ATS keywords guide.
Ignore advice that hurts readability
Do not strip out the achievements and clarity that persuade a person just to please a tool.
Trust a human check too
A recruiter can tell you things no checker can, like whether your CV is actually compelling.
A checker is one input, not the whole answer. The fundamentals, covered in what an ATS is, matter more than any single score.
Want more than a score?
Send your CV over and a recruiter will tell you what a checker cannot: whether it is genuinely compelling. Honest feedback, no obligation.
